Authors Note: This is a response to the Secret Life of Bees. I wrote this piece because in the book Lily grows up without a mother and a father who treats her very poorly. She decides to run away to find a better life for herself. She knows that she doesn't have to live the way her dad does.
Authors Note: I wrote this poem as a response to the Secret Life of Bees. The main character in the book doesn't have a mother. Her dad is extremely mean. In her life her maid takes the mother role. I decided I wanted to write about my mother.
Parents give us a map for life. They tell us which is way is right and which is wrong. Our family values are shared and expected to be followed. We believe what are parents say is always right. As we grow more mature we realize that values and beliefs aren't told to us. They are defined by our self. We begin deciphering what is right and what is wrong, and we realize that we're our own individual.
In the book the "Secret Life of Bees'' Lily decides that she does not want to live her life like her father. She figured running away to search for her mother was the best way to part from him. Lily believed her mother was still alive. At this point Lily knows that living with her cruel dad isn't an option. She wants to live a better life surrounded with people who love her.
Lily is figuring out who she as her own person. She knows her father's way of life isn't right -- she must find her own way. Lily understands she doesn't come from a loving family and she believes that a loving family is needed.
Authors Note: This is a response to the Secret Life of Bees. I wanted to write about family because in the book the main character Lily does not have a loving family. Her dad is extremely mean to her and mother died. To Lily family is Rosaleen, the person in her life that cares the most about her. This poem is based off William Carlos William's poem The Red Wheel Barrow.
So much happens
When
A loving caring
Person
Making you their
Family
Calls you their
Own
Author's Note: This is a response to the Secret Life of Bees. I wrote this piece about the Racism against Rosaleen in the story.
"Did you ever see one that black," said the white man.
"Never seen one that big either," his friend chimed in.
The two white men sitting at the gas station playing cards talked to Rosaleen as if she was nothing because of her color. Rosaleen, of woman of braveness and courage, was on her way to town to register herself to vote bringing Lily with her. The men at the gas station laughed at her idea of registering to vote -- to them it was a joke. Rosaleen stood up for herself knowing that consequences would happen.
As Rosaleen stood in front of the white men she showed that she was not afraid to stand up for herself. Standing up for what is right is an important quality not many people show. Rosaleen wanted to be treated fairly and have the same rights. She wasn't bothered by the fact that she was in jail for spitting on a white man's shoe. She knew that it wasn't right because the white man had beaten her. Because of her color she was the one who ended up in jail.
Many think racism is gone. It's not. Many deal with racism everyday. Many don't even worry about the people who suffer and go through the tough times like Rosaleen did in the story. Many laws have been passed about racism but it still happens. There can be numerous laws that state racism as an illegal act but only the people can change this. Everyone can decide for themselves that they will not follow in the act of racism. Racism is a problem. Racism is a problem that can be stopped.
Authors Note: This is a response to the current book I am reading which is the Secret Life of Bees. In the story Rosaleen, a black woman, stands up for herself when she is being harassed by white men because she wants the right to vote. This poem states how she had the courage to stand up for herself. This a poem in the style of William Carlos William's poem the Red Wheel Barrow.

Your supportive drive
You’re my mom
You're incredible
I love you
Great poem. It reminds us everything about our moms. I liked how you switched of with your and you're. You also did a great job describing a mother. In addition, your author's note was pretty helpful. Amazing poetry response!
ReplyDeleteThis is very sweet. I sure hope you had your mom read this! It's a clean, simple poem that fits the clean, simple message.
ReplyDeleteI think you have the whole red wheelbarrow thing down, and it's probably tie to move on, letting the style you learned there influence you in your next work. The prose piece is also very nice. I like how you start with a creative introduction style, and work into the parts from the novel. I am anxious to see what style you start to write next.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Wheel Barrow Poems:
ReplyDeleteNice Job! I think you really mastered righting like William Carlos Williams Re Wheel Barrow poem.
The Last Poem on the Page:
This poem looks like it could be on a Hallmark card for Mother's Day. I well describes what Lily is lacking -- a mother. Nice Job!
Comment on essay response: I loved the way you started your paper; it is an advanced technique to not start with a technique and you do a great job of that. I think your conclusion was excellent, touching on a very important topic that is relevant to our society today. If I had to critique one thing, I would say that you could maybe change up your sentence lengths so they don't sound almost choppy. You didn't do this too much but I saw it more in your conclusion. In you last sentence I think you tried to make short sentences for effect and that is great but maybe it might sound a little better if you said, "Racism is a problem -- a problem that can be stopped." Just a suggestion, but great job!
ReplyDeleteYou are getting really good at poetry, especially the one where you copied Williams Carlos Williams. I especially liked the response about racism because it is short, but still explains a lot.
ReplyDeleteI liked the post about Rosaleen. You really brought out some good points. I especially liked your concluding paragraph, it really made the reader think. Nice job!
